Avenue Q and Grandma's 78th

For my birthday my sister had given me tickets to see Avenue Q with Phil, so we headed into the city for the day for some lunch before making our way to the show. Everything in NYC is decorated for the holidays. There was a fountain near the Time Square area that had giant christmas ornaments. I wonder how they get those in the fountain...

We even had a chance to stop by Rockefeller Center to take a look at the tree. I don't think they finished putting up all the decorations yet, but it still looked nice with the lights they had up.

Despite the cold the streets were jam packed with people, so Phil and I tried to escape the crowds by hiding in some of the stores...unfortunately most stores were just as crowded as the streets were. We tried to get into M&M World, but the line to get in was out the door, so we headed to the Hershey's store instead. One of the workers inside the door was handing out a free piece of chocolate to everyone. As you can see, Phil was very excited about the free chocolate.

After walking around a bit more we finally made our way to the New World Stages theatre. I've seen a couple shows in NYC, but this was my first time to this theatre. The outside building looked too small for a theater, but when you walk in there are escalators that take you below street level to where all the theaters are. A very good idea with how difficult real estate can be to come by in the city.

It was fairly new and modern looking on the inside and the layout was similar to a movie theater, with different stages for different performances marked by giant stage numbers. Here I am outside the theatre after the show. I look so tiny under that sign.

Phil's not a big fan of musicals (or shows in general, but he especially dislikes musicals). I thought he'd enjoy Avenue Q more because of the puppets and the explicit lyrics. I thought for sure he would get a kick out of the "The Internet is for Porn" song...I guess there was still too much singing though for Phil. He did seem to get a kick out of the Lucy the slut. There he is posing with her poster outside.

After the show we stopped by Junior's for dessert. They are well known in NY for their cheescakes and they have places that sell just their desserts, but they have a restaurant as well.

We ordered a slice of their pumpkin cheesecake since Phil loves pumpkin, and some of their hot chocolate.

Times Square looks so pretty at night with all the lights.

Before heading into Queens we made a quick stop at the Toys 'R Us to take a look around. The Toys 'R Us in Times Square has a giant ferris wheel in the middle of the store that you can ride in.

Look at all the people! It wasn't too bad getting into the store, but once we were in it was like herding cattle. There was barely enough room to walk anywhere, so we left pretty quickly.

Our last stop for the day was Phil's grandma's apartment in Queens. Everyone from Phil's mom's side of the family was getting together to celebrate his grandma's 78th birthday. At least we think it was her 78th birthday...there seemed to be some conflicting opinions on the matter...

Phil and his sister snuck in a few bites before dinner.

It seems every year for her birthday they always sit the youngest member of the family, Phil's youngest cousin, next to her as she blows out the candles.
